How to make Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in a Microwave Oven

By Julie A. Lind

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is a staple food for young children, college students and adults on a tight budget.  Not only is it cheap, but it’s also super easy to make in a microwave oven.

Microwave cooking directions for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese used to be included on the boxes. But once Kraft came out with their Easy Mac product, which in my opinion is not nearly as tasty, Kraft removed the microwave instructions on their original Macaroni and Cheese boxes.

As a mother of two kids, I love being able to make Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the microwave oven.  I find it is so much easier, and safer, using the microwave method compared to the traditional method of boiling water. I no longer have to worry that my child will get near a pot of boiling water, and my kids love helping me make their favorite meal.

To prepare Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the microwave oven you will need a 2-quart microwave-safe dish (the water may boil over if you use too small of of a dish), 1-1/3 cups hot water, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, 1/4 cup milk, and a 7.25 ounce package of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

In your microwave-safe dish add 1-1/3 cups water. Heat the water for one minute. Pour the pasta from the box into the hot water (be sure to remove the packet of cheese sauce first!). Stir the pasta and put the uncovered dish in the microwave oven for 5-7 minutes on HIGH (this time may vary depending on your microwave oven). It is very important to stir the pasta every 1-2 minutes to avoid having the pasta stick together. You will know the pasta has been cooked long enough when there is no longer water in the dish. Do not overcook.

Once the water is absorbed, remove the dish from the microwave oven. Add 1/4 cup butter or margarine and mix together with the pasta.  Next add the cheese sauce that was included in the box along with 1/4 cup milk. Blend all of the ingredients together until the pasta is well coated with the cheese sauce. Enjoy!
