When I step back from the hustle and a bustle of Christmas preparations, I can’t help but think, what is Christmas all about? How did Santa, shopping malls, ugly sweaters, and Elf on the Shelf become our main focus? Why is it that so many people focus on the preparations, but don’t have time to actually celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ?

Christmas is like planning a huge birthday bash and forgetting to invite the guest of honor.

Is this really how Jesus would want us to celebrate His birth? Actually, Jesus probably would avoid any type of birthday celebration. He didn’t want to be treated like a king. He wanted to be our teacher. He knew we had so much to learn in so little time. He would expect us to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and love our neighbors as ourselves.

How did Jesus’ gift of eternal life turn into the huge circus we call Christmas? We received the ultimate gift. Why do we keep expecting more and more each year? Why do we teach our kids that Christmas is about getting gifts from Santa instead of teaching them how to love like Jesus?

Christmas can be such a lonely time for so many people. They see all the images on television and social media of happy family gatherings. They often feel they have missed out on the happiness that everyone else has. The truth is, if we focused on Jesus, they would know they are never alone. The love that Jesus has for each of us is greater than any love we could receive from a friend of family member.

This Christmas, remember to keep Christ in your Christmas.
